Will a tall planter blow over in wind?
Ours are shaped with weighted, wider bases, and once filled with compost they are very stable. In truly exposed spots, add a layer of gravel in the base before planting.
Do I need to fill the whole column with compost?
No - part-fill the base with upturned pots or polystyrene, then add 25 to 30cm of compost on top. Cheaper, lighter and most displays never notice.
What should I plant in a tall planter?
Something upright in the middle - a cordyline, box ball or small conifer - with trailing plants spilling over the rim. Height on height is the classic doorstep look.
